Christ’s Resurrection: Historic Triumph Over Death
Text: Matthew 28:1-20 IBCSS April 12, 2009
Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
Christ’s resurrection was a historic triumph over death that paved the way for fallen mankind to the hope of eternal salvation. The empty tomb confirmed the victory of Christ and the certainty of the Scripture. The resurrection of Christ is a hope-giving event that every believer should be mindful of and proclaim all over the world.
In I Corinthians 15:1-4, it is written, 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (KJV)
The death, burial and resurrection of Christ should not be forgotten by human race lest they overlook their opportunity to receive God’s salvation so great and free through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Good News is truly bad news for the devil, and for such reason, he will do his best to hinder lost souls from knowing the Truth. True Christians must keep on telling the Truth so others may be set free from the bondage of falsehood. In John 8:32, Jesus said, And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (KJV)
True freedom comes from the Lord. Man-made freedom tends to lawlessness, but true freedom is always guided by the principles of truth. Through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, the victory that God wants us to have has been freely offered to everyone. What a wonderful blessing to have this victory through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
As we continue to study the Bible account of the resurrection of Christ, may God widen our knowledge and deepen our understanding about the significance of the resurrection of Christ.
(I) The Grave Had No Power To Hold Him
Matthew 28:1-6
-The power of God was displayed marvellously
· In the first day of the week
· In the presence of the angel of the Lord
· In the presence of the guards
What a powerful Saviour we have in Jesus. Death is cruel, the grave is greedy, but it had no power to hold Christ in its dark domain. The power of God was truly displayed in the resurrection of our Saviour Jesus Christ. In the first day of the week, Jesus arose from the dead and it is only proper for us to gather together on Sundays to show our love and give praises unto our True God and Living Saviour Jesus Christ.
In I Corinthians 15:55-58, it is written, 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. (KJV)
Knowing that we have a Living Saviour who loves us so much should keep us excited to serve Him till He comes. Our labour is not in vain in the Lord and the time we spend in communing with Him is not a wasted time, but a precious moment and a strength-giving fellowship. We sing the song “More About Jesus” and we love to sing it over and over again, but sometimes we neglect our opportunity to know him more. In Philippians 3:10, Paul wrote, That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; (KJV)
Knowing more about Christ’s resurrection will surely bless the believers’ hearts because His resurrection assured them of their justification. In Romans 4:25, it is written, Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. (KJV) What a blessing to know that Christ arose from the grave and now lives in every believer’s heart. What a truth to be proclaimed! What a song to be sung! We must keep on singing “He Lives”, and surely, joy will never depart from us.
(II) The Grave Had No Power To Stop The Good News
Matthew 28:7-10
-The angel proclaimed the resurrection of Christ
Luke 24:1-8
-The disciples were told to tell the historic resurrection
-The visible and bodily presence of the Lord Jesus
vindicated His victory over death
John 2:19 John 10:17-18
Right after the resurrection of Christ, his enemies tried their best to thwart the spreading of the Good News by giving large amount of money to the soldiers; but we praise God because truth always triumph and it cannot be covered or replaced with lies. We really thank God for preserving the Truth and the religious freedom we are enjoying in our time.
Year after year, the so called “Holy Week” is being observed by millions of professing believers throughout the world. Evidently, it became a part of man’s tradition, but the needed message for the world to take heed is being overlooked. May true believers fail not to see the spiritual needs of others, but always be ready to tell what Jesus did for us at the Cross.
True Christians should get involved in the fulfilment of the Great Commission so others will not be deceived by the enemies. The Lord’s command is to proclaim the Gospel to every nation so people may come to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Matthew 28:18-20, the Bible says, 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (KJV) These passages will surely inspire every servant of God to become active in telling the world that Jesus saves.
If we really believe that Christ arose from the dead and His resurrection was truly a historic triumph over death, then we should not be ashamed to tell the Truth, but support the world mission program of the Church. His victory is also our victory to be proclaimed. Keep on rejoicing in the Lord!
