God’s Blessings Upon Those Who Fear Him
Text: Psalms 112:1-10 IBCSS September 17, 2006
Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
We strongly believe that every person in his right mind longs for great blessings to be poured unto his life, but without fear of God, his longings will never be satisfied because he will never gain the loving-favor of the Lord. He who loves gifts more than the Giver is an insensitive man. On the other hand, he who desires wisdom must realize the importance of true reverence toward the Holy One.
In Psalm 111:10, it is written, The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. (KJV) A God-fearing man will surely walk in the path of wisdom and will greatly enjoy the loving-kindness of the Lord. While he follows the commandments of the LORD, his understanding will be widened progressively and his life will be drawn to God in a joyful way.
Psalm Chapter 112 tells us about the blessings of those who fear God. A careful study of this lesson will usher us to the next level of understanding concerning God’s way of bestowing His delight-giving favor. In verse 1, it says, “Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.” (KJV) This passage makes us realize that true fear of God does not only give pleasure to the Lord, but also creates a “delight-producing obedience” to an upright man. Questionable obedience is mind-numbing, but genuine obedience to the Word of God is delightful.
Fear of God is a life-changing attitude that liberates man from questionable lifestyle. Without man’s high-regard toward God, his life remains offensive to the Giver of Life. In Psalm 55:19, it is written, God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God. (KJV) This verse from the Bible warns us of the consequences of not fearing God. God is the Righteous Judge and we know that He will give due punishment to them that respect not His ways.
In Psalm 55:22-23, it is written, Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee. (KJV) Through these thought-stirring verses, we could see the future life of the wicked and, on the other hand, the caring love of God for those who fear Him.
The Bible tells us that the bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days. As we go deeper on our Scripture study, Psalm 112 will reveal to us the wonderful blessings God has prepared for those who fear Him in truth.
(I) Powerful Children
Psalm 112:1-2
-Victorious children
-Blessed children
Powerful children are the pride of their parents and in most cases, godly and successful people are blessed result of their parents’ wise investment. There are many ways of investing profitable things in the lives of our children: teach them the basic things in life; enroll them in good school for their secular education; bring them to Bible-believing Church to feed their spiritual needs; spend time of prayers for them; and carefully teach and instill Bible principles to them. But the best way of investing excellent things into their lives is by our visible and godly example.
In Psalm 112:1-2, it is written, Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed. (KJV) A simple scrutiny of these passages will reveal to us that living in the fear of God is not only beneficial to us today, but to our children as well.
(II) Wealth And Riches
Psalm 112:3-5
-In the house of God-fearing man
-In this life and beyond
Isn’t it a blessing to know that fear of God is the secret of the upright’s wealth and riches? In Psalm 112:3-5, it is written, Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. (KJV) What an assurance-giving passages! Without doubt, those who live in the fear of the Lord will experience and enjoy God-given wealth and riches in this present life and beyond.
(III) Inner Strength
Psalm 112:5-8
-Fearlessness
One important thing we could learn from the Word of God is that God-fearing people are kind, prudent, firm in their godly stand, and very courageous in their spiritual battle. Their faith in the Lord is notable and inspiring to others. In Psalm 112:5-8, it is written, A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies. (KJV) Truly, fear of God produces right discretion and inner strength which cannot be overcome by the forces of evil. Fear the Lord and enjoy His power at all times.
(IV) Honor
Psalm 112:9-10
-Undeniable honor
As we observe how serious men desire earthly honor, we can conclude that if people could only buy lasting fame, surely, honor will be selling like hot cakes in every place. Apparently, the world could only afford to offer passing honor which lasts for a short period of time; but not so for those who fear the Lord because their righteousness which lead them to honor that will never fade. The Bible says, “his righteousness endureth for ever.”
In Psalm 112:9-10, it is written, He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish. (KJV) What a desirable honor that even those who do not fear God will see the God-fearing people being blessed and exalted with honor. Truly, man’s fear of God delights the Lord.
May we live the rest of our times in the fear of God, not because we desire bountiful blessings from His loving hands, but because we love Him with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our might, and that we have pleasure in serving Him according to His blessed will. Remember what the Lord said in John 12:26, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” (KJV)
