Jesus’ Mother And Brethren
Text: Matthew 12:46-50 IBCWPM August 5, 2009
Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
Some people may be wondering why Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?” in Matthew 12:48. These questions surely stir up our minds to analyse such words from our Lord Jesus Christ. There must be an interesting reason behind what Jesus said concerning Mary and her children. We thank God because we have the preserved Word of God in our time to help us every time we need more enlightenment concerning things which are hard to understand.
Related passages from the Bible that could help us in our study about the words which Jesus said to His disciples are found in Luke 11:27-28, 27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. (KJV) We realize that Jesus was displeased when someone disturbed Him during His preaching. He wanted everybody to listen and obey what God wanted them to do.
The reply of Jesus to the woman, “Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it” denotes that Jesus does not want people to lift up Mary because by doing so they will miss the Word of God and overlook the blessed will of God for their lives. There is no doubt, Mary was a classic example of a Christian, but to lift her up in unbiblical way is surely improper before God.
The Lord is more concern of the will of God for His followers than elevating Mary in an inappropriate manner. It is wiser for people to seek the Lord first before anything because He has the pre-eminence over all things. In Colossians 1:18, it is written, And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (KJV) As we continue on our study of the subject “Jesus’ mother and brethren”, may we take note of what the Scriptures say so we may not be derailed from the course of Truth.
(I) The Earthly Mother And Brethren Of Jesus
Matthew 12:46-48 Mark 6:3 John 7:5
-Mary is Jesus’ earthly mother
-His brethren which are recorded in the Bible:
· James
· Joses
· Juda
· Simon
· His sisters
(II) The Disciples Of Christ
Matthew 12:49-50
-The hearers of His Word
-The doers of the will of God
The Lord Jesus is God and it is His will to reveal Himself as the Saviour of the fallen human race. He is the way, the truth and the life and no one could go to heaven without believing Him. In I Timothy 3:16, the Bible says, And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. (KJV) This passage talks about the Lord Jesus and it also reminds us that we should preach Christ to everyone and lift up no other name but Him alone.
During His preaching it seemed that Jesus was not eager to see Mary and His brethren as others expected Him to do. He did not stop teaching the Word of God and it seemed that He was more interested with His hearers than His brethren. In John 7:5, it says, For neither did his brethren believe in him. (KJV) This verse reveals to us what kind of hearers His brethren were during His earthly ministry. No doubt, the Lord was more interested with the people who were willing to hear His Word and He called them His mother and brethren.
In Matthew 12:49-50, it is written, 49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. (KJV) What a blessing and honour for believers who are hearers and doers of the Word to be called mother and brethren of the Lord Jesus. We must keep in mind that they who love hearing the Word are commendable before God.
The Bible says in Luke 10:41-42, 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (KJV) God wants us to choose His Word more than anything else and He loves believers who hear Him and do His blessed will.
