A Man Whose Trust Is In The LORD
Text: II Kings 18:1-7 IBCSWS September 2, 2007
Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
A man whose trust is in the Lord will surely experience the loving favor of God. God wants us to trust Him whole-heartedly so we may not become victims of unbelief, but be guided and be blest by His loving hand. In Jeremiah 17:7, it says, Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. (KJV) What a heart-cheering passage from the Bible in times of hopelessness.
The Bible does not only remind us of the blessing of trusting God, but also warns us of the sad result of trusting man. In Jeremiah 17:5, it is written, Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. (KJV) We count it a blessing every time we are warned of the evil consequences of departing from God. We truly need the Word of God to guide us in the way we should go, lest we go astray and be found miserable someday.
Without doubt, each one of us wants to be blessed by our Heavenly Father, but oftentimes, most people seek happiness from the wrong place, which is the world. As a sad outcome, they always end up sorrowful and frustrated because they overlook the true source of happiness, which is the Lord.
II Kings Chapter 18 gives account about King Hezekiah whose life was blest by God in an extraordinary way. A careful study of his godly life will reveal the secret behind his great success: his trust in the Living God. The presence of God in his life was undeniable. In II Kings 18:7, it is written, And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. (KJV)
As we go through our lesson, may we have the desire to wholly follow God’s precepts so we may please Him at all times. King Hezekiah’s life could teach us valuable Bible principles to live by.
(I) He Will Do What Is Right
II Kings 18:1-4
-In the sight of the LORD
He who puts his trust in the Lord will surely do what is right in the sight of God. He will please God and not men. Hezekiah exemplified a life that is pleasing to God by destroying idolatry-related things and by doing things which could give glory to God.
In II Kings 18:3-4, it is written, And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did. He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan. (KJV)
Like Hezekiah, true believers must not compromise with the world, but speak up and do what is right for the sake of the Truth. In Romans 12:1-2, it says, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (KJV)
(II) He Will Become A Unique Person
II Kings 18:5
-One of a kind
Unique Christians are believers who, through their strong stand for “what is right” and high regard for the Holy One, make a difference and show the special distinction of being in Christ.
The people during Hezekiah’s time were undeniably inclined to idolatrous activities. They trusted other gods, but Hezekiah trusted the LORD God of Israel. In II Kings 18:5, it is written, He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. (KJV) What an inspiring example for the people of God to follow especially in times of spiritual deterioration. He strengthens others to live a godly life.
(III) He Will Walk Closely With The LORD
II Kings 18:6
-In the path of righteousness
How pleasant it is to see people walking closely with God in the path of righteousness. Such pleasant sight could only be clearly seen in the life of a man whose trust is in the LORD. It is illustrated in II Kings 18:6, For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses. (KJV) May we walk with God consistently and become living testimonies for the Lord and for world to see.
People who walk with the Lord will truly experience the reviving presence of God in their lives. Trust in the Lord, walk with Him daily and be a shining light to guide the lost.
(IV) He Will Prosper Significantly
II Kings 18:7
-The LORD will bless the works of his hands
How we wish that God will bless the works of our hands, but if we don’t abide with His Word, such wish will remain a dream without a fulfillment. In II Kings 18:7, it says, And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. (KJV) Without the presence of God working in our lives, true success is unattainable.
Keep on trusting the Lord and let the world see God’s presence and working through your life. In Jeremiah 17:7-8, it is written, Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. (KJV)
