A man who is really sure and cares for his citizenship knows how to behave and protect the image of his country which he stands for. If he temporarily lives in other country, he seriously tries to do his best so his love, respect and loyalty for which he is representing will be undeniably manifested.
In spiritual sense, believers are being reminded that their ultimate citizenship is in Heaven. Through the Word of God, believers have the assurance of eternal citizenship. In Philippians 3:20-21, it is written, For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. (KJV) What a hope-giving truth for Christians to ponder as they live in this chaotic world.
It is always beneficial for believers to be aware and to ponder the things which God has prepared for them to enjoy in the future. Awareness of the things of God keeps believers from vanity and foolishness. It also makes them realize their true riches in Christ.
The world and its passing passion are not worthy to be loved by Christians. Loving the world only diverts believers from the path of faith. Consequently, they will overlook what God wants them to do in this present life. The Bible warns believers not to love the world. In I John 2:15-17, it is written, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. (KJV) Taking heed of these warnings will truly help sharpen the true image of Christianity in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation.
(I) Guards Believers From Focusing Their Minds On
Earthly Things
Philippians 3:15-19
-Guards believers from fleshly lust
In Colossians 3:1-4, it is written, If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. (KJV) An excellent proof of true conversion is a well-focused mind on things above. Knowing and enjoying our spiritual treasures in Christ guard us from fleshly lust.
(II) Keeps Believers Excited On Heavenly Things
Philippians 3:20-21 Philippians 1:21-24
-As they live a Christ-centered life
-As they look forward to God-prepared blessings
Christians should be the happiest people living on earth today because of their exciting mission and glorious future. Knowing that the best is yet to come for believers keeps them enthusiastic in their walk with the Lord. Walking by faith is truly exciting and rewarding.
In I Peter 2:11-12, it is written, Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. (KJV) Through these verses, Christians could realize that they are just passing through this present course of life and their dwelling place is far better than this troubled world.
Believers, be aware of your citizenship and keep on shining for Christ!
