Future Events That Enliven Believers To Holy Living

Text: I Peter 3:10-14    IBCGH     April 29, 2007

Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar

We are living in a time and place where its inhabitants can possibly do all things that would help them attain a better life. Undoubtedly, everyone wants success, more success and greater success; nobody wants to be a failure in this competitive world.

Earthly success is what the world is offering and we know that it cannot offer eternal things simply because the world itself is a temporal one. We must keep in mind that true success comes not from the world but from the Lord.

We realize that the world and its offers could greatly attract human beings and its influence is undeniably manifested through the lives of people from all walks of life. Many are unaware, but we could also see that the world is molding its inhabitants according to the crafty manipulations of the god of this world.

As the world claims its own, believers must be sensitive to what God wants them to be as they serve Him and wait for His coming. God wants believers to live a holy life, unspotted by worldly things.

The Bible reminds believers that they are just strangers in this present world and that they should not love the world. The course and system of this world may seem impressive to most people, but we must also understand that the things of the world are just ephemeral which will soon fade away. It could not even satisfy the ultimate longing of man’s soul, which is salvation.

In II Peter 3:10-13, it is written, Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (KJV)

As the people of the world drown themselves with worldly activities, true believers must consider what the Bible says and be warned concerning the uncertainties of the things of the world. Expecting such things to happen, we ought to live a holy life for God’s honor and glory.

(I)      The Expected Coming Of The Lord

I Peter 3:10

-The certainty of His coming

He who doubts and questions the coming of Christ is surely an unbeliever. He will be humiliated before the Righteous Judge. On the other hand, he who puts his trust in the Lord rejoices in truth and waits patiently for the Lord’s coming without murmurings and doubting.

(II)    The Predicted Catastrophic Heat

I Peter 3:10-12

-Elements-melting heat

Investing our time, money and strength selfishly in this present life may only bring sadness and frustration to us someday: but using our lives and possessions for the Lord will surely bring profit. May the predicted elements-melting heat move our hearts to be more serious on our commitment to live a holy life.

(III)  The Promised New Heavens And New Earth

I Peter 3:13-14

-The presence of righteousness

Pondering on all the benefits we are enjoying today in Christ and the future blessings which God has reserved for us, it is only proper for us to live righteously so other people may realize the blessedness of our hope in Christ.

Christians must keep their spiritual enthusiasm going and should not be dismayed in this present life because God has prepared for them a far better life. They must not focus their minds on earthly things which will soon pass away, but keep their focus on the things of God.

As we are being assured of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, the catastrophic heat to come and the well-desired new heavens and new earth, we don’t have any right or reason to divert our concentration from godly things to corruptible things. We must cheer up one another and walk in the path of holiness so God will be delighted. Keep on glorifying God because sooner or later Christ will surely come.
