Hiding Place In Times Of Danger
Text: Psalm 119:113-120 IBCSWS November 25, 2007
Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
It is man’s instinctive reaction to find a safe place every time his life is being endangered. Having a secured hiding place in times of danger is a great relief. In dire moments, man-made refuge may offer us some limited protection within a limited time, but one thing is sure, it will not vanish our fears and insecurities.
Reliable protection comes not from man but from above. Trusting man instead of God leads people to more frustrations. In Jeremiah 17:5-6, it is written, Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. (KJV) These passages show us a sad picture of a man whose heart has departed from the Lord.
God wants us to be blessed and not to be cursed. But it seems that most people, especially the unbelievers, are inclined to doubt God’s way and usually embrace the impressive and deceitful ways of man. As a sad result, they find themselves needy and hopeless in a place called “worthlessness”. We should not rely on things that seem reliable in our own sight, but be reliant on the Living God from whom all blessings flow.
In times of need, it is best to remember that God cares for us and that His loving hand is always ready to protect and bless us. In Jeremiah 17:7, it says, Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. (KJV) God rewards unwavering faith.
David was a blessed man who really experienced and enjoyed God’s special protection, and what he said concerning his hiding place will surely inspire us to put our trust in the Lord. In Psalm 32:7, he said, Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. (KJV) Stay away from danger zone. Trust the Lord and take refuge under His wings.
(I) God Is The Hiding Place Of Godly People
Psalm 119:113-115
God is truly the hiding place of godly people. In Psalm 119:113-115, it is written, SAMECH. I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love. Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God. (KJV)
-To protect them from evil thoughts
Our thought life is an unseen battlefield of good and evil. The devil will try to implant wicked thoughts into our mind because it is his desire to establish a command post within our thought life hoping he could manipulate and destroy us in a tragic way. Knowing his evil plan for us, we must be careful not to welcome wicked imaginations, but let the Holy Spirit control our lives.
The most reliable protection against evil thoughts is God and His Word. He who loves the Word of God hates evil thoughts. The sanctifying power of the Word of God will keep us away from wickedness as written in John 17:17, Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (KJV) Having problem with evil thoughts? Come to the Lord, love His Word and let Him be your hiding place.
-To shield them from evil doers
The importance of spiritual shield in the spiritual war zone should not be overlooked. He who acknowledges that God is the ultimate shield of mankind is an intelligent man, but he who looks down on Him will never sing the victor’s song. God is our shield and he who puts his trust in Him will be triumphant over evil doers.
-To preserve their lives
Fears and insecurities of life could lead weak people to unpleasant and shameful downfall, but those who hope in the Lord will be preserved miraculously. The psalmist said in Psalm 119:116, Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope. (KJV) God wants our lives to be preserved and used for His honor and glory. He wants us to enjoy abundant life. On the other hand, our adversary wants us to be destroyed and put to shame. But praise God for lifting us up and for keeping us from shame and hopelessness.
Considering all the dangers we are encountering each day, we have to strengthen one another and rejoice because God who is the Preserver and Restorer of Life is our perfect hiding place.
-To keep them from falling
A person who makes the Lord his hiding place will never fall into the pit of sin. He will not be shaken by storms of life. His integrity will stand forever because the Lord is his strength and his steps are guided and ordered by Him. In Psalm 119:117-120, it is written, Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually. Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood. Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies. My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments. (KJV) Fear of God keeps us walking in the path of wisdom.
As we realize the dangerous presence of evil thoughts, evil doers, sin-related downfall and untimely death, may we not yield to them and become their victims, but find our way to our prepared hiding place, the Lord Jesus Christ.
