The Perfect Law Of Liberty

Text: James 1:25   IBCSS   March 12, 2006

Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar

Every man in this world wants freedom, but not all men understand true freedom. Some think that freedom is a sort of a license so they could do anything they wish to do even if it is outside moral and ethical framework. Consequently, they become slaves of lawlessness and self-centeredness.

In spiritual sense, Christian liberty is an appropriated freedom guided by the principles of truth. A person who truly repented from his sins and by faith received the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior is undoubtedly called “a sinner saved by grace.” The Lord set him free from the bondage of Satan and sin. He is a free man in Christ designed by God to live in holiness. In I Thessalonians 4:7, it is written, For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. (KJV) Christian liberty has not been and will never become associated with the works of wickedness.

Because of ignorance, many professing and carnal Christians misunderstood the true significance of their freedom. In I Peter 2:16, it is written, As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. (KJV) This passage from the Bible warns true Christians not to abuse their God-given freedom but to possess a distinct identity as servants of the Living God.

In the light of the Scriptures, we could fully understand the true essence of “The Perfect Law of Liberty.” In James 1:25, it is written, But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (KJV) An in-depth study of these verses will give us a good understanding that strict adherence to the perfect law of liberty leads Christians to moral soundness and blessed life.

                   (I) The Gospel Rule Of Life

    James 1:25

    -The Royal law    James 2:8

-The Gospel law of love   James 2:12  Galatians 5:14

-The law of Christ    Galatians 6:2

The Gospel Rule of Life is the best and highest kind of statute to guide us as we journey in the path of faith. It’s a royal law because its author is no other than the King of kings. It gives us the freedom to express God’s love freely without limit. Truly, it’s a law that leads us to Christ-likeness.

                   (II) Not To Be Forgotten

    James 1:25

-An essential law to look unto

Christians should not let forgetfulness derail them from the right way. In James 2:23-25, it is written, For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. (KJV)

A closer look and a careful application of the Gospel Rule of Life will keep us away from deception. There is always a tendency to follow our own wicked way if we overlook the importance of God’s Word. Fear God, live according to His Word and enjoy a peaceful life.

(III) An Excellent Law To Live By

      James 1:25    Philippians 1:27

-Leads believers to a rewarding life

What a rewarding life we have in Christ. We really thank God for His preserved Word which guides us to live a well-lived life. In II Peter 1:3-4, it is written, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (KJV) Pondering these verses in our hearts could lead us to appreciate God’s excellent way of educating us so we may enjoy our God-given freedom in accordance to perfect law of liberty.
