Salvation Of Lost Souls

Text: Romans 10:1-15   IBCSS   June 7, 2009

Preacher: Jose B. Cabajar

Some people may take it lightly, but we truly believe that one soul is more precious than the whole riches of the world. Matthew 16:26 illustrates the truth, For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (KJV) This passage from the Scriptures reminds us of the insignificance of earthly success when compared to the preciousness of man’s soul. What a sad mistake for a man to gain all earthly riches but overlooks the salvation of his precious soul.

God’s desire is that all human beings will come to know His salvation so great and free. God is not willing that any should go to hell and suffer for eternity. In II Peter 3:9, it is written, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (KJV) God wants all people to be saved and it is a delightful thing for Him to see people repent from their sins and put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Salvation of fallen man is God’s great concern. Our loving Father is so gracious and merciful unto us that He gave His only begotten Son to die at Calvary for us sinners. Christ displayed His love for us that though we are not worthy to die for, yet He shed His precious blood, gave His life and died on the Cross so we may obtain salvation through faith in Him. On the third day, He arose from the grave according to the Scriptures which gave us the assurance of eternal life.

What a blessing to know the certainty of our salvation as written in I John 5:13, These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV) Surely, we are now safe and enjoying God’s wonderful grace and we will be taken up to Heaven any time the Lord Jesus Christ comes. But how about the lost?

(I)  Believers Must Have A Burden For Lost Souls

Romans 10:1-7

The vanishing concern of many believers toward lost souls is quite alarming. It is shameful, but true, that many believers today are more concern with the affairs of the world than Biblical activities of the Church. Soul winning is taken for granted because of believers’ indifferent attitude toward the Great Commission.

In Romans 10:1, Paul said, 1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. (KJV) What a compassionate heart Paul had for lost souls. May this soul-stirring passage set our lives on fire so we may not lose our burden for the lost.

-Believers must consider the condition of the lost

·  Inappropriate zeal

Apparently, countless people are religious but have not the Truth. They have the zeal and pride of having religion but no salvation - Christ has no place in their hearts. Knowing the condition of the lost should stir us to pray for them earnestly so the Lord may open their eyes and realize the true way of salvation which is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. (See verse 2)

·  Ignorance of God’s righteousness

Ignorance of God’s righteousness is an evil chain that holds religious people under bondage of spiritual darkness. Salvation by works is an example of such spiritual ignorance. Seeing the ignorance of the lost should trigger true believers to carefully teach them the way of truth and patiently win them to Christ. ( Study verse 3 )

·  Indifferent attitude toward God’s way

The Bible tells us that God’s way is far different from man’s way. The way of the Lord is true, and going away from that way will lead a person to destruction. In Proverbs 14:12, it is written, There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (KJV) It is heart-breaking to see dying souls without helping hands to save them from falsehood. As we see the indifferent attitude of the lost toward the Truth, may we not neglect our responsibility to shine as lights to guide lost souls to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. ( Please study verses 4-7 )

(II)   Believers Must Teach The Importance Of Faith

Romans 10:8-11

The Bible teaches that faith comes from hearing the Word of God, and for such reason, teaching what faith can do to a man is vitally important. In Romans 10:8-9, it says, 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (KJV)

-Salvation through faith in Christ

·  The power of the Gospel

Believers must proclaim the Gospel without reservation. True Christians must be courageous to tell the Truth and stand for what is right and pleasing before God, as Paul said in Romans 1:16, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (KJV) Do not be afraid to spread the Word of God for it has the power to set people free from the bondage of falsehood.

-Salvation brings forth good profession of faith

It is written in Romans 10:10-11, 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. (KJV) People who have truly experienced genuine conversion have a good profession of faith. It is their pleasure to tell how God changed their lives and how He uses them in spreading the Good News.

(III)  Believers Must Tell The World That Salvation Is Not Only For The Jews

Romans 10:12-13

-Whosoever will   John 3:16

·  Jews and Gentiles

Salvation is not limited in its extent; it is not for the Jews only, but for Gentiles as well. Romans 10:12-13 clearly stresses, 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (KJV) Praise God for His extended mercy and grace to sinners like us.

God wants all people to be saved, know the truth, and live by its principles. In I Timothy 2:4, it is written, 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. (KJV) God’s love is so wonderful and His salvation that is so great and free is being offered for everyone.

(IV)  Believers’ Course Of Thought Must Be Followed By Course Of Action

 Romans 10:14-15

-More missionaries must be sent

Every mission-minded believer knows how vast the mission fields are and how few the labourers are in those fields ready for harvest. True believers are familiar with the Great Commission, but head knowledge alone without burden for lost souls cannot move them an inch to go out and win souls for Christ. Course of thought without course of action will never accomplish anything. We must keep on sending Spirit-controlled workers to the mission field, and surely, many will be blest.

-Mission-minded believers must continue supporting worthy servants of God

In Romans 10:15, it says, And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! (KJV) Sending workers to the mission field should not be taken lightly but seriously. We need to invest wisely and it takes good amount of money to send labourers in the harvest field. Consistent supporters also play a great role in maintaining workers in their area of responsibility.

As we see dying people without hope of eternal life, may we not overlook our God-given task to tell the Good News to everyone. Deep commitment and involvement are so important in reaching the lost with the Gospel of Christ. More Christians must get involved in mission giving while faithful supporters must continue supporting worthy servants in the ministry so the Great Commission will be fulfilled marvellously for the glory of God.
